Frustrated by badly designed support systems

KB article 313322 describes a problem I am having with
logging onto a clients PC. It says I should contact PSS to
get the required fix. I try to do this on-line and get
asked for a product ID. I enter the XP product key from
the media and it gets rejected. I follow the link which
claims to tell me how to find the product ID and it tells
me to log into the PC and do some stuff to find it. KB

logging onto a clients PC. Now what do I do?

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES.
The Product ID number is shown under "Registered to".
(Should be a 20-digit number)

"KB article 313322 describes a problem I am having with
logging onto a clients PC..."

Snippet below if it helps:

'...the logon request is rejected without any error
messages.'

Sorry if the 'creative' writing style foxed you :-) It was
past midnight here (UK) when I wrote it. Gotta say, I'm
not sure now that KB313322 DOES describe it properly. The
same thing happens whatever the login used - passworded or
not passworded. If you get it wrong it tells you you got
it wrong, if you get it right '...the logon request is
rejected without any error messages.' Same happens in Safe
Mode and Safe Mode with command prompt.

'Off-line' (drive slaved in different PC) in-depth AV scan
revealed no viruses. 'Off-line' in-depth spyware scan
revealed nothing.

In the end I fixed it by re-installing Windows.
