XP login problem

I updated Nortons last night, went thru the process of updating it and
running it. I rebooted and everything was fine, I did what I needed then
shut down. I tried to get onto the computer later that evening and I get to
the Log in screen where you select users. I select my name, then it sits for
a few seconds, then says saving settings logging out. After numerous times
of trying this with my name I tried my wife's, same thing happened with hers.

Also the same thing happens in safe mode.

Any ideas?
