XP linux dual-boot disaster

My Toshiba Satellite L-10 laptop dual-boots XP Pro and OpenSuse 10
Linux. While running OpenSuse I accidentally closed its lid and then
opened it immediately - in time to see it saying XP was hibernating(!)
When I restarted it, it went into a cycle of a quick flash of the
'loading GRUB...' (the Linux boot loader which precedes the Windows
launch, if so chosen) message, a sudden shutdown and a reboot a few
seconds later only to be followed by the 'loading GRUB...', shutdown,
restart, etc.

This dual-booting had worked fine before but seems to have been
compromised by the lid closing action. I have attempted to fix this
down the Linux route by running the OS10 CD and doing all the
repair steps including reinstalling GRUB. After a reboot the problem
remained. Even a reinstall of the OS - it was a new, test install
anyway - didn't help so I'm looking for another fix. I dread
reinstalling XP as it has a particularly tedious set of apps to
reinstall and reconfigure.

What other steps can I try to clean this up, please? I am happy to
replace the Linux booting with XP as I can sort that out later but
don't know how.

TIA

Since your XP installation is important...
try to get that repaired first.

Boot with yout XP cd and from the repair console issue the command fixboot
or fixmbr

Hopefully you will get XP up and running...
if that works OK you can try reinstalling grub...
