I have previously installed drivers for my HP printer.
Then I didn't use it for a few months. Now, everytime
I turn the computer on and the printer XP wants to
install the drivers. How do I make XP stop asking to do
this. I already have the drivers necessary to use it?
Thanks
Carmen

Boy, HP hardware sure is great, but thier driver installs can be sloppy.
I'd reccomend going to the HP web site, finding the support / downloads
section, and downloading / installing the latest drivers for your device.
Close any extra open programs before running the install, and reboot when
prompted. HP installs have a red light / greenlight , "mother may I" kind of
feel to them, and if they don't run exactly the way they want to, the results
are not always perfect. So - give it a whirl and let me know wha tyou get.

Hi Carmen,

Checkpoint: Unhide Hidden Devices in the Device Manager, view the problem
devices and remove them manually from there.

If no go:

This workaround is for an HP Printer, however dated:

1. When the Found New Hardware Wizard starts at startup of the computer,
click <next>.

2. When it asks you for the HP disk, (the next thing that will require a
response from you probably), click <ok>. However, do NOT insert the disk
into your CD-ROM drive.

3. On the next screen that comes up, there will be a button that is already
highlighted telling the wizard where to find the printer driver (which is
what it is looking for). This button will be pointing it at "other media,
CD-ROM,etc.

The trick is to DESELECT this button. At that point, the button for your C:
drive will become active and you can select the C: drive. It will also
probably be prompting you with the location for the already installed HP
printer driver that is somewhere on your C: drive. (If not, you need to
click browse and locate the driver).

4. After you have deselected the CDROM and selected the C: drive, click
<ok> (or <next>) The Wizard then makes a second copy of your printer driver
(and, by the way, creates a second "installed printer" in your Control
Panel/Printers). And then, the wizard finally completes and tells you that
you have successfully installed the new hardware.

5. On subsequent startup, the Wizard should then NOT run.

Added info:

This problem can occur when the printer driver is initially installed. The
printer installation program from the manufacturer does not enable the New
Hardware Wizard to finish its detection of the newly installed printer.

To work around this problem, enable the New Hardware Wizard to finish, even
though the wizard cannot detect a new printer.

Hi Steve,

If the article didn't apply in your case nor help, what did Canon have to
say about this? If you haven't done so already, I would suggest trying
their Support and/or FAQ's, Forums.

Good luck and keep us posted. It will help others. :o)

Its not after a restart, its as long as the printer is plugged in. Canon had
no answer except to say its a MS problem! There has got to be a reason XP
seems to resee a new hardware. I wish I did have a yellow ! to point me

Will keep trying, the printer response from MS seems to be basedd on a the
LPT port is there one for USB?

addendum: removed serial cable from old printer port (already disconnected
from old printer) replugged in Canon printer at rear. Restarted and
everything works! Afraid to try and duplicate!
