Assuming it's not a virus (scan your system if you haven't already done so),
then it could be:
1) one of the various worms currently around on the Internet. Does it crash
when you connect to the net, with a message about "RPC Locater Service"? If
so, then you need to install a firewall, and also install all the latest
security updates from Windows Update.
2) More likely - a hardware fault of some sort. Check:
-Memory. Is it a good quality brand? If you have more than one DIMM,
does the system become more stable if you remove one or other of them?
-BIOS settings. If you're overclocking anything (memory, processor, AGP,
PCI) then restore it to default settings.
-motherboard. Again, is it a good quality board?
-other peripherals. If you remove all non-essential devices - leaving
just the processor, memory, hard drive and graphics card - does the system
become more stable? If so, that suggests that one of the other cards
(network, modem, sound etc) is the cause.
-PSU. Check that your power supply is delivering enough current to power
your peripherals. For a typical system with one HDD and one CD(RW) drive, a
300-350W PSU is adequate. You must ensure that the 4-pin ATX12v connector
from the PSU is connected to the motherboard - this provides stable power to
the processor voltage regulator.
-Temperatures and cooling. Are all fans working? Is the processor
heatsink installed properly? Is there adequate airflow through the chassis?
