XP is slow

Xp is very slow. Programs either don't respond or take a
very long time to work.

I have run spybot, norton, check disk and defrag.

Don't know what else to do?

Can anyone help?

If you're not running a P4 you probably shouldnt use XP.
I installed XP on a P# and it ran real slow. that my
advice

Is this a new install of XP on your old computer?
Was XP running fine but is now slow?
How many programs are running in the system
tray on startup? Note there may be other programs
running not shown in system tray.
One thing I would try is run msconfig and uncheck
the programs under the startup tab and see if any
of those fix the problem.
Last have you ran Adaware?

Along with JBM's suggestion of using msconfig to shut
off unneeded startup programs try shutting off some
backgroung services.
Control panel>AdminTools>Services
Indexing service is a resource hog here is a link that

I'm running Xp Pro on a 1.2ghz celeron laptop, and i wouldn't call it slow -
most of the time, anyway.

XP in itself is a hog of resources. So, if you have
little memory left, every MB is precious. I suggest you
take out all progs you do not use regularly that are
backed with disk: I cut my files from 2 million to 47,000
and the difference was remarkable. GOOD LUCK

That's a drastic overstatement. XP runs very well on many much
lesser machines. I run XP on two machines here

1. A 512MB Athlon 1.4. It runs very well.

2. A 256MB PII-400. It's considerably slower than the Athlon, but
still acceptable.

I installed XP on a P# and it ran real slow.

How much memory did it have? If it wasn't at least 256MB, that
can be much more significant than the speed of the processor.
Other factors affecting speed are how you have the machine
configured, what background programs you run, what apps you run,
etc.

Describe your hardware configuration, epsecially how much RAM you
have.
