hi everyone,
i am trying to install windows xp
professional on my windows 98 FE. It goes fine until it
gets to 13 mins remaining. It stops and there's nothing i
can do. ctrl+alt+del doesn't work so i have to unplug the
computer. when put back on xp title screen comeson then
says setup will continue and carries on from 39 mins
remaining then stops again at 13 mins reamining. Anyone
got any ideas?
My system Specs (don't laugh): Packard bell c400/s
64MB RAM
400Mhz
6.4GB Hard drive
Pentium 2
Intel Celeron
I am no computer wiz but that's what i know about my
computer. The computer i am trying to update doesn't have
the internet (i am using a new computer that has the
internet connected). Any ideas or advice on how to get it
to work will be well appreciated. From Dan

Dan, did you do a WinXP hardware and software compatability check?
WinXP
needs at least bare
minimum 128MB of Ram with 256MB just Ok and 512MB Fine.

Dan, just to add to what Rich Barry said, your computer should stay
running Win98. You might want to upgrade it to Second Edition (if you
can get it), but even then with you having a Packard Bell I wouldn't
suggest it. PB's were *very* proprietary machines and it might be hard
to get drivers for your hardware. Even if you manage to get XP
installed (doubtful), I really don't think it will ever run well on
that machine.

Cheers,

Malke

When i checked most of the sites and things like that it
said that 64MB RAM was minimum suported and on the tables
that win98 was compatible. Do you think it's my RAM
memory that is the problem? That there's not enough?
Ihope it's not this because then i've pretty much
knackard the computer unless i buy some more RAM. Reply
with your thoughts. From Dan

Well... just because they say 64MB of RAM is the minimum doesn't mean it
will run well. I wouldn't run XP with less than 256MB of RAM, and
that's just for normal work like office apps, email, web surfing. It
could quite well be that your RAM is marginal; Win9x will run on
marginal RAM where more modern os's like XP and Linux will not. But I
gave you my thoughts; keep Win98 on that box. If you are dying to have
XP, then I would just get a new machine. I'm sorry that isn't what you
want to hear, but I have to be honest with you. Of course, it is always
your choice, but in my professional opinion, putting XP on that box
will be a mistake.

Good luck,

Malke

I'm prety sure that they said that 64MB RAM was minium
supported. I'll check anyway. Do you think it is my RAM
memory that is the problem?

64MB is the official minimum, but it's nowhere's near enough to
do anything useful in Windows XP. Neither is 128MB.

How much memory you need depends on what apps you run, but almost
everyone needs a least 256MB for decent performance. For some
people, for example those who edit large photographic images,
more than 256MB--even much more--can be required for good
performance.

Whether the lack of RAM is responsible for your installation
problems, I'm not sure, but I doubt it.

Hi Malke,
if your saying i should try and get 98 SE it's
too late because the computer won't let me do anything to
it. When it starts up it just carries on the setup to xp.
I'll try get into the computer but i think i've bust it
just because i've used an upgrade. The big problem is i
put the xp over the 98 so the 98 no longer exists. Got
any other ideas on what to do? Reply soon. from Dan

There is nothing you can do at this point except to boot with a Win98
floppy, start fdisk, delete partitions, create partitions, and clean
install Windows 98. You will lose all data on the drive, of course. If
your computer came with a Restore Disk, use that to reinstall Windows.
Otherwise, use your Win98 cd. Since XP would not install, you might
want to test your RAM first. From a working computer, download the
precompiled Windows binary of Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com. This
will make a bootable floppy. Boot with this and let the RAM test run
for an extended time unless you get errors immediately. If you get
errors, replace the RAM.

Good luck,

Malke
