PC freezes when XP is loading!

Tried re-installing XP (home edition) and when it was at the "saving
settings", it sat there for a very long time and then the computer just shut
down. When I booted back up, it tried loading XP, then stopped and then at
the blue screen (after about 5 mins.), the message "stop... unknown hard
error \system root\...\ntdll.dll". Have tried everything even installing xp
pro but still stops at the same message. I have tried the system restore to
a previously state but nothing comes up.

Really desperate! :(

That might be a hardware error.
If you have a known good stick of RAM, try swapping it for the existing RAM.
If that fails, you might pull the addin cards (soundcard, modem, etc) and
see if it works.
I had a system recently that the CPU cache RAM failed, nothing worked right
and it wouldn't disable properly in BIOS until I updated that.
Good Luck
