XP Install + Updates

Recently I've been having compatability issues with
certain hardware which is ongoing with manufacturer.
Upshot is that I've been experiencing "blue creen of
death" within XP and on occasions had to re-install XP.
What's frustrating about this is that having purchased XP
when it first came out, there are a large number of
critical and recommended windows updates to re-install
which obviously takes time.

Now, if I bought XP recently, I presume that this would
be inclusive of the majority of these updates, leaving
perhaps a few to download and install.

Is it possible, if I install original XP on new
drive/partition, download and install all critical and
recommended updates, to create a new installation CD-ROM
that works in same manner as original in it's
installation process but would now be inclusive of all
updates ?????? If so, what would I need and how do I do
this????

Purplehaz,

Many thanks for such a prompt reply. I'm off to the
recommended site now.

PurpleHaz,

A couple of further questions:-

1. Would you recommend downloading latest SP1a as
opposed to using existing version (can't remember
how 'old' this is). I presume by downloading 'later'
veersion it would have more of the subsequent updates
included ?? Currently downloading (using midband 150K
service) one for networked computers/system
administrators as single PC seems to be express only
version

2. I also have home LAN system with PC's running XP Home
Edition, Win2K and Win98. All these are upto date with
no outstanding fixes etc. I understand I can use SP1a
for Home edition but PC only supplied with recovery
disc. What needs to be copied of this disc?? Also I'd
like to do similar with win2K and 98 is this possible and
are there instructions on how to do this???

Many thanks for your time and valuable input

The only difference between sp1 and 1a is that in 1a the java virutal
machine was removed per Sun's lawsuit against ms. If you follow the link to
download the full sp1a on the website I provided it takes you to the full or
express download page. Choose the language at the right and click go. Then
you'll be able download the full sp1a (network install)which is about 135mb.

If you only have a recovery disk then I'm not sure you can do it. The
recovery cds usually only hold setup files and the xp files are usually on a
hidden partition on the computer, which I dont think you can copy to a cd. I
think you need a real xp cd, either oem, retail, or volume license. Since
you have an oem computer you need to oem xp cd in order to make the
slipstreamed one. I have no idea how to make similar cds with win2k and
win98, sorry.

Purplehaz,

Just had a power outage here which prevented an earlier
reply - also currupted user profile on son's brand new,
just delivered and being set up PC. I'll fix that later.

Thanks for your valuable input. Much appreciated. I'll
have to think about purchasing retail version of XP Home
as son's new machine comes loaded with this. I'll post
in Win2K/98 forums to see if there are any bright sparks
like you that can help on those.

Once again many, many thanks.

Regards and Best wishes

You're welcome. Also another option could be to download an oem version of
xp from one of the file sharing programs(like winmx) and use that to create
your slipstream cd. This would be legal cause you have a legit product key
license already, you just need a copy of the oem xp cd. This wouldbe only if
you have a broadband connection as it a big download.
