XP Install Can't Detect SATA Drive

K

Kento Jungleman

Greetings,
Have just rebuilt system with new mobo (MSI K7N2-Delta ILSR) and want to
reinstall XP Pro on my SATA drive. Have Backed up master partition and wiped
it, two other partitions exist with data which has also been backed up (each
partition about 50GB).
Borrowed an IDE drive to temp. load WINXP onto, to access the net and
update mobo drivers, etc.
In order for WINXP to recognize my SATA drive, the mobo site suggests I
install their floppy drivers (F6 during XP install), which I attempted. If
the IDE drive is connected, XP locates it exclusively, and asks if I would
like to Repair or Install anew. When DISconnected, the XP install accepts
the SATA floppy drivers, yet still "fails to recognize any hard drives..." I
know the drives are properly connected, as they work fine under the IDE
drive's boot.

Any ideas? Thanks for your time and advice!
Peace, Kento.

F6 install to add the driver at the start of the installation (google for
it.)

Or integrate the driver into the installation media.

Check the BIOS for your IDE/SATA settings. You should be able to configure to
use both the IDE and SATA drive(s). You may need to also configure the SATA
ports depending on the mobo, which I haven't looked up the manual for info as of
yet to see.

Thanks, Brian, your response helped me sort out a bizarre SATA problem I was
seeing. I can't explain the behavior, but here's what happened.

I had changed over to SATA as my boot drive prior to doing a major upgrade.

In your change of the boot drive was an IDE drive with the OS installed on it
still connected? If yes, what exactly did you do in for the new SATA drive to
become the drive with the OS of choice?
the new configuration was running fine, then suddenly failed to boot. I
discovered the boot drive's sata cable had come loose. reconnecting it failed
to remedy the problem. I discovered that the computer would boot if I put the
winXP cd in the drive, but did not boot off the cd.

Taking into consideration yoru original post, this explenation is a bit
sketchy.
I still don't understand why this worked but I checked the SATA boot sequence
per suggestion below, to find the O/S drive had wound up in last place! all is
OK now.

Glad to see that all is in order, yet something appears to be out of sorts.
many thanks,

You're welcome, have fun and enjoy.
