XP in Portege 4000 hangs on power down

I have a Toshiba Portege 4000 running XP Prof and when I
shut down it hangs on a clear blue screen with just the
cursor frozen. I cannot hibernate or standby either. I
sometimes get the message that "Communications Port
(Com1) driver may need to be updated. But I cannot find
any updates. Any help would be appreciated. This happens
whether or not I am docked and whether or not I have any
USB peripherals attached.
