XP Home: Unable to go into hibernation mode - recurring problem

M

Mr. Low

Hi,

Earlier my Pc was not able to go into Hbernation or Standby Mde.

The error message was “ The device driver for the ‘Communication Port (COM1)
devices is preventing the machine from hibernation. Please close all
application and try again. If problem persist, you may need to update the
driver.â€

I uninstalled the the COM1 driver at the Device Manager and Scan for
hardware changes and let the system to reinstall it back. This has solved the
problem.

However when I run Check Disk or PC Doctor Scan at OEM website, the problem
recurs.

I need to repaet the same process to enable it for hibernation.

Is there anyway I could overcome this recurring problem once and for all ?

Perhaps I have downloaded some unsuitable drivers earlier on, can I
unsintall those drivers and how to locate them ?

Thanks

Low

What was the driver? What device does it relate to?

Using Microsoft to update third party drivers is not the best approach!

Please locate the Error Report in Event Viewer and post a copy.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Is this a Standalone or Networked computer? What exactly is your copy of
Windows XP? Home Edition, Professional or ?

What is your computer make and model? Is it a Dell?

Select Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager. Before
Ports (COM & LPT) you see a small + sign, which you need to click on to
expand the item. You should find at least COM1, COM2, and LPT1. What is
there? Is there a yellow question mark against one or more items? If
there is a yellow question mark right click on the Device and select
Properties. On the General tab you will see a box about the Device
Status -whate error code number is displayed?

Have you being trying to add a device such as a Printer, Scanner or
other harware peripheral.

Event ID: 36 produced this complicated comment, which has me struggling
to understand:
