XP home

A user brought in a laptop with XP home on it and wants to connect to a
shared printer on another PC...usually simple.

We have at least 70 workstations on our network...is this why I can not
connect to the shared printer on the other workstation? I see the share and
the printer but relieve unable to connect message...is the limitation of XP
home or should I look elsewhere.

TIA

I never get prompted for an account...I can get right into the PC and see
the printer.

Also I thought XP home would only support 5 computers in a workgroup...NO?

TIA

There is nothing inherent about Windows XP home that would prevent this
from working. XP home cannot join a domain though
so there may be some problems with authentication. The client on the XP
home machine will get prompted for credentials when
accessing this resource. You may need to create a local account on the
system that is hosting the shared printer that match the
credentials used by the XP home client. This should allow access to the shared printer.

Do you have a domain? I can't imagine you have a 70-computer workgroup. And
XP home supports 5 connections, Pro supports 10.

"See" is not "Connect". You may need to map the printer using a
domain account and password, or the account/password of the target PC
with shared printer.

Yes. But you're not in a workgroup.

Actually...I have a Domain with office computers joined to that domain and I
have agents that use the network for internet access and access to our web
server...so I guess I have a Domain and a Workgroup and since the computers
I am trying to "connect" are part of a large workgroup XP Home can't do it.

I presume by this you mean that these people use their own computers that
are not part of your domain?

so I guess I have a Domain and a Workgroup

Only matters if the "hosting" computer is a workstation. Network printing
would be a good idea in your situation - rather than sharing locally
installed printers from workstations.
