XP Home Volume ID Utility

D

Don

I just reformatted my HD. I identified what my volume serial number was
before reformat (command prompt>vol). I downloaded a utility Volume ID so I
could reset the new serial number (with the old one), after reformat, but
when I open the volume .exe file I get a quick flash of what looks like a
command prompt window. It doesn't stay on long enuf for me to do anything.
Anyone else use this utility on XP? Is there another utility I can try?

I don't want to have a problem when I activate XP in the next few days.
Thanks

Don

Open a command prompt window (Accessories - Command Prompt) and run
the volume.exe file from there.

Good luck

Can you walk me thru how to do that? The name of the file I'm trying to
open is "volumeid.exe". I have it on my desktop.

Open a command prompt (DOS) window -- start / programs / accessories /
command prompt.

Then type "volumeid" at the prompt. You will have to have the program
(volumeid.exe) in a folder that is in the "path", or you will have to
first change to the same folder as the file.

Barry,

I have the Volumeid.exe in the folder that is in the "path".

C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah>

I now am able to open the utility in the Command Prompt Window. the utility
says to do the following:

Usage: volumeid [drive:] [Id]
Id must be in the following hexadecimal format: xxxx-xxxx
C:Documents and Settings\Sarah>

I tried typing C: 38CA-990F after \Sarah> all I get is the same path. I
tried C:38CA-990F I get error message "C:38CA-990F" is no a recognized
command. What and where do I input the old (38CA-990F) serial number?
Sorry to be so dense.
Hi

Try this:

volumeid C: 38CA-990F

Don

Barry and Torgeir,

volumeid C:<space>38CA-990F was it...

I had tried that combination, but, without the space between C: and
38CA-990F. I appreciate you taking the time to help.

Kind regards

Don

Ron,

Thanks. It's been awhile, but, I remember you from WIN98 forum. You helped
me out quite a few times.

Start - run and type in cmd.exe to get the DOS style command window.

In that be sure you are at the folder containing the VolumeID.exe
program and give
Volumeid x: yyyy-yyyy
where x is the drive letter to be corrected, and yyyy-yyyy the new
identifier

You will then have to exist and reboot to bring it into use on an NTFS
partition
