XP HOME update causing startup problem

Dell computer running XP Home

I completed the automatic download of XP HOME update.
THe install apppeared to go successfully.
On the initial reboot after update, the systems came up
to the WELCOME screen - which it never had done before
the update - and stopped. There are two buttons on the
WELCOME screen - One for the system users name (Linda)
and one for TURN OFF COMPUTER. NOthing else on the
screen. WHen I click the (LINDA) button the desktop
appears for a second then goes back to the WELCOME screen
and indicates that it is logging off and saving my user
information. That's It! I cannot get past the WELCOME
screen now. I loaded the DELL XP reinstall CD and
rebooted but the system ignores the CD and goes back to
the sequence I just described. I cannot get past the
WELCOME screen since the XP update was installed.
How do I get out of this?

when powering up hold down the f8 key to boot into safe
mode. maybe your bios got screwed up and won't see to boot
from the cd for repair.
