I am upgrading from XP home to XP pro. (PC came with XP
home) I have plenty of disc space and memory. I go
through the preparing for installation screen then it
restarts to the startup screen, which now says XP pro,
and hangs forever. I have manually shutdown and rebooted
with the same result. I have left it sit overnight but
the startup screen never changes, just the little bar
scrolling. I have sat on hold with MS support three times
for 54 minutes long distance only to be disconnected at
54 minutes each time. (yes I have a case number) I have
used the HP system recovery option to at least return to
XP home twice now. Can anyone offer a helpful solution? I
have a HP pentium 4, 3.06ghz HT with a 120 gb HD and 1028
ram.

Thanks in advance,

KC

Disconnect any hardware peripherals, such as a printer, scanner, etc.
Make sure you only select the default "Upgrade" selection during
setup, not "New Installation". Are you using a conventional
"retail upgrade" XP Pro CD? OEM versions do not permit upgrades.

I am not using a OEM, it is a new retail Upgrade version.
I did select the default upgrade selection.
I will try with all peripherals disconnected and report
back in a day or so.

Thanks for the tip and wish me luck,

KC

Unplugging all the peripherals did the trick. Thanks for
the advice. Too bad my e-mail was lifted by some virus
mailing fool. I get sent 10-12 a day since I posted here.
All claiming to be patches from MS.
