XP Home to Pro Upgrade failure

Robert Lamoreaux

Tried to upgrade a friends Compaq Preserio 3000 laptop
with a legal upgrade disk. Upgrade starts at with about 52
min. At about 32 min left, or about 10% into network
setup, screen goes black, except for mouse. No error
displayed, Even with Restart on error off. Setup restarts
back at Loading Windows or about 39 minutes left. This is
an endless loop. Selecting cancel only does the same
restart. Removing the CD only causes setup to ask for the
CD. Started in safe mode, got message "Setup can't run in
safe mode" then it restars again. The only way I could get
out of this loop was a full restore. Lost everything. Help

Balderdash. Hogwash. Malarkey.

The upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro is about the simplest and most
foolproof upgrade of any versions of Windows.

This type of complication can occur if the installed XP Home is at a
higher service pack level than the XP Pro CD you are using for the
upgrade.

So if the XP Home has been updated to Service Pace 1, and the XP Pro
Upgrade CD was the original version without Service Pack 1 then you
would have to uninstall Service Pack 1 from the XP Home before doing
the upgrade. The same applies to any beta version of XP Service Pack
2 that might have been installed.

And when upgrading the operating system it is always a good idea to
uninstall the antivirus software first, then reinstall it after the
upgrade. With a number of the better antivirus programs it is
generally possible just to reconfigure them so that nothing is loaded
automatically at startup but with the most popular programs such as
Norton and McAfee a complete uninstall is advisable before the
upgrade. Otherwise the antivrus software will misinterpret the
upgrade as being a virus attack and will block it, causing the upgrade
to fail.

Good luck
