xp home taskbar locking up

The taskbar of my WinXP home occassionally locks up. When it dows this no
icons show on it (it looks like an empty frame) and the mouse pointer is a
two headed arrow like on resizes locations. Any ideas??

In Task Manager select the "explorer.exe" process and end it. This will
close explorer but Task Manager will remain open. In Task Manager again, go
to File>New Task and in the box type "explorer". Explorer should be
restarted, see if that brings everything back. Of course this might have a
more complicated cause behind it and my suggestion is just a temporary
"fix".

I turned off auto hide on the task bar and it has not hung up since. Wonder
what was going on?
