XP Home sp3 "access is denied"

Morning Everyone,

Newbie here.

Okay......so sp3 won't finish it's install, and shows the error "access
is denied."

I read Article 949377 and did resolution methods 1 and 2 (this one made
me very nervous). I tried installing it in safe mode and it won't do it
there either.I then tried method #3 but I don't have an entry in System
Restore named Guided Help (Registry Backup)---nothing like that. I can't
access any Restores previous to this month.

I was going to attempt and online chat with MS but my XP came with the
computer from Dell. My warranty expired a while ago though and I;'I'm
not sure they'll talk to me.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any advise offered.

Method 3 of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 requires you follow the
steps. It will reset the perms to default and likely will fix your problem.

If you follow the steps as laid out - everything should be fine. They are
pretty detailed and not hard at all.

You download a file. You run that file and install. You copy and paste
some stuff into a notepad document and save that newly created document with
a specific name. You double-click on that newly created file and run it.
You wait. It finishes after some time and you reboot for good measure and
try to install SP3 again.

I realize this may make you nervous - but the truth is - it's not going to
harm your system unless you copy/paste/edit the text in the notepad document
before saving it in such a way that actually works (doubtful).

In any case- you get free SP3 support with Microsoft no matter what your
computer is.

A place to get FREE support for SP3 installation issues *from Microsoft*...
