XP Home SP2 will not boot past "blue" startup screen...

Good day! OK, HP laptop, just ran current antivirus/spyware/defrag checks the
day prior. Use a firelite 60gb drive to shuttle info back/forth to work and
a 120 gb maxtor as the backup...they are usually attached as the computer is
used.
--A couple of days ago there was a video driver that went haywire, but had
booted successfully since restarting in start mode...no problems at all since.
--Go to boot up and it goes well until the blue start up screen...then it
just stops. Hard drive clicks if I hit "enter" or spacebar, but nothing,
even if left alone for 2-3 hours (checking to see if a long boot). Other
than that, fan works, hard drive sounds normal until it stops.
-- Tried starting in SAFE mode....same thing. Got the safe mode screen and
it stopped at the blue screen too.
-- Moved the CD boot up to the 2d "activity", but didn't work. Didn't boot
off of XP disk (forgot about that), but tried off the Norton Antivirus disk
and it didn't work.

Thoughts?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply.....I probably could have used a better term. I
am not getting the "blue screen of death" when it boots, such as if it froze
while in normal operation. The blue screen I refer to is the normal screen
as it's booting, with the Windows XP logo on it, before the userid/password
area pops up.

-- I get the usual blackscreen area with the XP logo and the running blue
streak...then it changes to the blue screen with the XP logo...and then
halts.

-- I do not get the "blue screen of death" screen nor any error messages.

Thanks, Casey

Sounds like a hardware problem. Check your cables, seating of your video
card, memory etc.
