I've recently started to get a problem with missing system tray icons
on boot up. Typically when I boot up correctly there are about 17
icons in the system tray. However recently I've intermittently started
to get boot problems where some 3 or 4 of these icons are missing.
When I say "missing" I don't mean they are hidden as inactive icons, I
mean they are missing altogether. When this happens I can usually do
an immediate restart and everything will come up fine.
The icons which are missing may vary, but typically it's the "Safely
Remove Hardware" which is always one of the ones that is missing when
my problem occurs.
A couple of other things may be worth mentioning. The Event Viewer
gives no clue as to the problem and, in particular, there's no sign of
there being any crash as part of boot-up. Secondly, my PC has a
hyperthreading Intel processor. I found that after upgrading to SP2
the system didn't run smoothly with there being frequent "hangs" of
about 10 seconds or so after which everything resumed. I found the
only way to cure these symptoms was to turn hyperthreading off. The
"missing icons" problem has only started to happen since SP2. I don't
know whether there's a link between this problem, SP2 or
hyperthreading.
