xp home shuts down

i bought a new laptop about 3 weeks ago with xp home. every now and again it shuts down for now reason. sometimes after using it for a while or sometimes at the log on screen. never while any programs are running. also, at times it will freeze while shutting down or going into standby mode.

Have you checked the Event viewer?Scan your system with latest virus
definitioned antivirus,spybot,search and destroy as well as with adaware.

If a new machine fails like this, a good chance is that it is faulty
hardware, and I would take it back straight away under warranty

I did all three things that you recommended. Nothing of importance was found and the problem remains. Anohther thing; when it shuts down a BIOS screen pops up for about half a second. It's not there long enough for me to read anything on it.
Thank you for your previous help. Do you know of anything else? I visited th xp shutdown website. Nothing really applied.

I think you should do what Alex Nichol suggested: immediately return the
laptop to where you bought it because it is probably bad hardware and
will not heal itself. Don't wait until your warranty is out!
