XP HOME OR XP PRO

I have xp home on my home machine. i have xp pro on the
office computer. i want to be able to access my home
computer from the office. i understand that xp pro has
this feature and, perhaps, somehow, i might learn how to
set this up, though nothing is as easy as the ad
material.

but, my home computer with xp home....will this work? i
read in two books that it would not. i need xp pro.

is this the case? also, if i end up buying another xp
version - pro - when will the next version be out and
will i have to pay for that all over again? in two or
three months.

i have tried to get a microsoft person on the line and
cannot find, any where, any number that get's me to any
person.

therefore, for the first time, i am resorting to this.

help.

does this come back to me on my email or to this forum
only? hope to my email.

i just want to get it working and so far, nothing works
after you get it half installed.

If you want to use XP's remote desktop feature to remote control a computer,
then the computer that you want to control(the host) must be XP Pro. You
can't connect to a xp home computer.

But... you can use a third party app like VNC or pc anywhere. With these
programs you can use xp pro or xp home, doesn't matter.

If you go with xp pro at home to use remote desktop to connect to it, then
don't worry about the next version and having to pay again, it's not due out
until 2005.

The Remote Desktop feature is only available with Windows XP Pro.

P.S. The next version of Windows won't be available until
sometime in 2005 or 2006.

You can do local networking with XP Home - what it will *not* do,
though, is formally 'join a domain' if your office network uses a domain
approach. That is only supported in Pro. You could use a directly
dialled phone connection between modems on the two.

But the feature that you are probably interested in is 'remote desktop'
so you can use computer A from computer B, using B's keyboard, mouse and
monitor just as if you were sitting at A. This does require A to be
running Pro - it allows accessing the office from home in concept,
rather than the other way around

As others have said, you cannot use Remote Desktop, as XP Home does not
support Remote Desktop hosting.

XP Home does support a VPN connection, which will allow you to have network
connection access to your home XP Home computer.

Check Help and Support for info on VPN.
