XP Home on laptop with small drive

I decided to resurrect my 7 year old Sony Vaio laptop. It has an AMD K6-III
550MHz processor and 256KRam. The hard drive is 5.7GB partitioned into a C
drive of 2.286 and a D drive of 3.436. The old operating system was 98ME. I
had to load WX Home of the D drive (clean install) because there wasn’t
enough room on the C drive for it. It runs fine but I get the message “You
are running low on disk spaceâ€. I ran Disk Cleanup which provided some
space. So 1) Can I repartition the drive to eliminate the C drive? 2)Any
ideas about what I might further delete from the XP Home install to make more
space on D? Thanks much for your help

You are desperately low on disk space. I also think that
your laptop is staggering under the load of WinXP. I suggest
one of the following options, listed in order of preference:

a) Get a faster machine with a larger disk.
b) Restore Windows 98.
c) Replace the disk.

Repartitioning is not really an option - you will run out
of space in no time at all.

An 80 GByte 2.5" disk is quite cheap and is also a little
faster than your current 6 GByte disk.

And if you want to run winxp, install 512mb ram for a more meaningful
experience - having installed a larger hd

I had no idea that it was possible to upgrade the HD. Any idea where I
should search for the larger drive? Thanks

Google returns 1,600,000 hits for "laptop+hard+drive"

Ebay returns about 2,800 for the same search

Backup your data first.

Now you will need to reinstall XP

When you do so...delete BOTH partitions and recreate as one

Once you get XP installed...go into the control panel
and under the advanced settings...adjust for best performance.

Then also re-adjust system restore to some minimal level

Now your machine should be OK for XP

More RAM and a larger HD would not be a bad ida...
but with those few tweaks you should be fine

You could start with your friendly computer dealer. Note
that with some laptops it's very easy to remove the hard disk
whereas with some it is extremely hard. Ask your computer
dealer if you cannot spot it immediately.

I beg to disagree. A 5.7 GByte hard disk is grossly undersized
for WinXP.

Yes...but it will do the job in a pinch.

I've set up a few machine with 6gig HD's and they were good enough for what
the user had wanted to do.

Besides...it literally forces one to back up data to CD or DVD <G>
