Hard Drive Help -- Please. Need more Space on my C drive.....

M

Marc

Hi --

I have a Sony Vaio computer I have been using for a good while now... I
just realized the C drive only has 15GB of Space while the D drive has
another 193GB of space... So there is plenty more...

Can anyone please tell me how to get rid of this parition and allow more
space for my C Drive? I have Windows XP, and because of the small amount of
space on my C drive my computer is starting to keep saying "i am running low
on disk space"

I really appreciate any help you can provide as I have looked everywhere for
an answer to no avail...

Thanks so much!

This was a major "crap setting" by Sony in a number of computers.
They maybe some good shareware, but it would be worth your $$ to invest in Partition Magic.
It is easy to use and has good results in extending the C drive into the D drive space without
loosing data.

Is D:\ a separate physical drive or another partition on the same
physical drive as C:\?

Assuming that you have two physical drives, there really is no simple
way to increase the available space. You can do some relatively minor
things, such as ensuring that the Recycle Bin isn't using its maximum
3.99 GB, setting System Restore to use only about 1 GB instead of its
default 12% of the entire drive; and running Disk Cleanup, but in the
end, you will have to move something.

It all depends on what is taking up the space on C:\. Consider moving
the My Documents folder. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310147 If you
have a lot of documents, this may take a while.

Consider downloading JDiskReport, which will graphically show you what's
taking up the space: http://www.jgoodies.com/downloads/index.html Some
things can easily be moved; others can't. Applications, for instance,
must be uninstalled and then reinstalled on D:\.

If you move data, make sure that you re-configure whatever program uses
the data to know where the new location is.

If both C:\ and D:\ are partitions on the same physical drive, then you
can use a 3rd-party disk manager to expand C:\ to take up some of the
unused space in D:\ (can't be done with native Windows tools).

Unfortunately, no version of Windows before Vista provides any way of
changing the existing partition structure of the drive
nondestructively. The only way to do what you want is with third-party
software. Partition Magic is the best-known such program, but there
are freeware/shareware alternatives. One such program is BootIt Next
Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a free 30-day trial, so you
should be able to do what you want within that 30 days. I haven't used
it myself (because I've never needed to use *any* such program), but
it comes highly recommended by several other MVPs here.

Whatever software you use, make sure you have a good backup before
beginning. Although there's no reason to expect a problem, things
*can* go wrong.

I have and have used Partition Magic 8. I agree with Richard that PM8
will do a fine job. However, perhaps a more economical solution lies
in a bootable GParted Live CD.

Either way, you'll be happy with the result.

This was a major "crap setting" by Sony in a number of computers.

It is easy to use and has good results in extending the C drive into the D drive space without
loosing data.

In addition to the suggestion for Partition Magic, I'd ask
whether you have any mechanism to do backups. Now would be
an excellent time to back up the drive, *before* you
do surgery.

On some of these computers, the computer comes with a hidden
recovery partition (don't delete it by accident). If you ever
use the recovery procedure, it may delete the contents of the
C: drive, and return the C: drive to the factory state. So
if you make a big C: drive, with plenty of personal files on it,
make sure you own an external USB hard drive, so you can back
up your data files regularly. Then, some day, when the internal
drive dies, you'll have something to fall back on. If you back
up the whole drive, including the hidden partition, you might even
get to keep the factory install image.

So before modifying the setup in a major way, post your
questions here. If you see partitions that you don't know
what they do, one of them could be your recovery partition.
Don't delete it, until you've at least burned the
recovery media they might have mentioned in the
laptop user manual.

Even with the services of programs like Partition Magic,
accidents happen. Which is why a backup ahead of time,
can help.

There is one freebie partition tool someone tried the other
day, and they ended up in trouble. So be careful.

Partition Magic, BootItNG (aka BING - not as intutive, and I have used it),
and perhaps the freebie, Easeus Partition Manager. None of them is really
all that expensive, however.

Others have suggested third party software which is one way to resolve
your situation. Other solutions are detailed below.

he default allocation to System Restore is 12% on your C partition
which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb. Right click your My
Computer icon on the Desktop and select System Restore. Place the cursor
on your C drive select Settings but this time find the slider and drag
it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get to the
Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

A default setting which could be wasteful is that for temporary internet
files, especially if you do not store offline copies on disk. The
default allocation is 3% of drive. Depending on your attitude to offline
copies you could reduce this to 1% or 2%. In Internet Explorer select
Tools, Internet Options, General, Temporary Internet Files, Settings to
make the change. At the same time look at the number of days history is
held.

The default allocation for the Recycle Bin is 10 % of drive. Change to
5%, which should be sufficient. In Windows Explorer place the cursor
on your Recycle Bin, right click and select Properties, Global and
move the slider from 10% to 5%. However, try to avoid letting it get
too full as if it is full and you delete a file by mistake it will
bypass the Recycle Bin and be gone for ever.

If your drive is formatted as NTFS another potential gain arises with
your operating system on your C drive. In the Windows Directory of
your C partition you will have some Uninstall folders in your Windows
folder typically: $NtServicePackUninstall$ and $NtUninstallKB282010$
etc. These files may be compressed or not compressed. If compressed
the text of the folder name appears in blue characters. If not
compressed you can compress them. Right click on each folder and
select Properties, General, Advanced and check the box before Compress
contents to save Disk Space. On the General Tab you can see the amount
gained by deducting the size on disk from the size. Folder
compression is only an option on a NTFS formatted drive / partition.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System
Information, Tools, Dr Watson and verify that the box before "Append to
existing log" is NOT checked. This means the next time the log is
written it will overwrite rather than add to the existing file.

You can generate more space in the system partition by relocation of
folders.

For Temporary Internet Files select Start, Control Panel, Internet
Options, Temporary Internet Files. Settings, Move Folder.

To move the Outlook Express Store Folder select in Outlook Express
Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder, Change.
http://www.tomsterdam.com/insideoe/files/store.htm

How to Change the Default Location of the My Documents Folder:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310147

You may also need to change Default File locations in the Microsoft
Office programmes you choose to move the My Documents folder. For Word
go to Tools, Options, File Locations, highlight Documents, click on
Modify and change file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options, General
and change default file path.

My Documents is one of a number of system created Special Folders
including My Pictures and My Music. These can more easily be relocated
using Tweak Ui. Download TweakUI, one of the MS powertoys, from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

In TweakUi select My Computer, Special Folders. You can scroll down to
see the full list of Special Folders to the left of the Change
Location button.
