Hmmm... seems like you have not used linux in a while....

Save your breath, I seriously doubt Carry has _ever_ used Linux. He's a
dyed in the wool M$ sheep with blinders on.

I would love to see a viable desktop alternative to Windows but until
someone figures out to make money from Linux and a standard of some sort
emerges it won't happen.

I agree that currently Linux is too complex for most users. Once a month I
pick a distro at random and install it on a new machine with a mind to
selling Linux desktops as an alternative. I have not found one that could be
set up and administered by an average computer user anywhere near as easily
as Windows. Now imagine that same user trying to figure out how to stream
mp3's to their stereo or record a TV show. Linux is getting much better. It
is still a very tough sell to an average user.

Absolutley Kerry its a nightmare and needs to be way easier to use
before its commercially viable as a Windows alternative. I have about
10 years experience with Windows PCs and I do the same as you with
Distros for the same reasons + I like to figure things out but I
reckon SUSE 10 is probably the one I will concerntrate on because its
not bad at all and improving massively with every new issue. Another
12 months development and IMHO Linux may be good enough to bite chunks
off the M$ SOHO market. Also I reckon being ahead of the game on Linux
is going to pay off big time in the reasonably forseeable future.

How did Microsoft do anything wrong here? HP made the computer and decided
how they were going to distribute Windows with it. HP has several choices
how to distribute Windows. They can use a recovery method (cheapest),
distribute with CD's they produce (next cheapest), or distribute with CD's
they purchase from Microsoft (most expensive). I'm assuming price was a
factor in your purchasing decision?

I have been a small time computer reseller for the past 14 years. In
the current market the vast majority of buyers have 3 major concerns
about the computer they buy - price, price, and price.

So in order to compete the computer manufacturers will opt for the
methods and configurations that are the least expensive to produce and
also to provide warranty support for. That way they can offer lower
prices.

I am in the same boat. I'm in a small town (smaller than Duncan) and closer
to the big smoke. I ran a couple of stores for 20 years here and in another
small town. About 5 years ago I sold everything off and went to just doing
support and consulting. I gave up trying to compete on hardware sales as it
seemed that price was the main consideration of most buyers and I couldn't
bring myself to sell the cheap crap they wanted to buy. Over the last year
my customers have forced me back into hardware sales. They were begging me
to make them good systems. I use top quality components, charge a decent
markup (double what I used to charge), and don't budge on pricing. Most of
my sales are repeat customers or word of mouth. Some people will pay for
quality you just have to find them. At first it was mostly business
customers but now I'm selling a few very high end game machines each month
as well. The market is starting to change.

I have a HP pavilion that I would like to reinitialize with Windows XP Home.
The task is not a problem, however I have not media which will allow me to
install Windows XP as a stand alone unit. I only have the 8 CD recover

Next time be sure to buy a system that includes a real copy of the MD XP
CD.
