Is this ok? to network and share internet connection "home" to
"professional"? The main connection is "home" and I would try and connect to
the internet from another pc using "professional"?

Is it better to network "home" to "home"?

It makes no difference.
The XP-Pro machine will use the Internet Connection shared out from Home
perfectly well.

( In fact, pretty much any machine that can use TCP/IP can connect to the
Internet through a windows Internet Connection Sharing machine. )

Hmm - I have exactly the same setup - ICS works fine but I am denied access
to the network in both directions even though the computers ping ok.

They are on a home network so I don't need any security but I've been trying
to get the thing to work for about 6 months now. Worked fine with XP pro to
Win98 so why not XP pro to XP home? (actually, I had network access briefly
when I did a fresh install of XP home but it was lost when I restarted the
machine next and I've never been able to get it back!)

<rant> Why is this such a hassle - I thought XP was designed to simplify
life! </rant>

Please excuse the piggyback, I hope it's relevant.

Since the machines can ping each other, basic TCP/IP is ok.

1) Can the machines ping each other by name as well as IP address?

2) Check NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP is enabled.

3) Shut down all firewalls on the internal network for troubleshooting.
( Always leave the firewall enabled on the Internet connection. )
