XP home - network printer - shutdown

friend's config: 2 networked pc's in office - XP HOME - cable
modem/router - not many updates to either PC.
A few years ago they had HP LJ3 as a network printer - hasn't existed
for a year or so. For the past few months(?) occasionally (50%) one PC
hangs at shutdown - it does all but power off. Hit the power button and
it powers down - at next startup no "scandisk" so looks like just the
signal to "power down" isn't happening. I'm wondering maybe it's waiting
for the HP printer to say "goodbye" and waits. I picked thru the
registry a bit - LOTS of stuff related to the LJ3 all over the place.
HP.com had a "run this to cleanup old printers" program , but still
stuff in there related to LJ3. Maybe not related at all - just checking
the obvious.

I see a lot of URLs related to troubleshooting shutdown problems and
will follow thru , but looking for URL at MSFT as "what exactly happens
when I select shutdown" to see where power off occurs. Any pointers ?

Why sometimes hanging and not others ? Eventlog is clean.
If it IS related to a non-existent printer, does it poll periodically
for "known" networked devices and maybe if shutdown is selected just
after a poll maybe it realizes - "ptr not there" and shuts down and if
it's been a while it waits for next period ??? As you can tell I'm
guessing bigtime. I've had him leave it hanging overnight when it
happens - never did shutdown.

Today I told him when he has some free time to log off - log on as a new
user with no password and try shutdown to see if maybe related to his
account vs system / all users. Reboot, log on as that new user then
shutdown again. THEN log back on as old username (to get his desktop
back). If it hangs as newuser, then I know it's not HIS account. If it
doesn't monitor it and let me know.

If it were mine I'd just reimage it since it only has a few apps on
there - but that's not my decision to make - yet.
