XP Home log in

After booting the computer I click on the icon to log on. It says loading
settings, then the desktop flashes for a second. Then it says logging off and
saving settings. It won't log on. I tried to boot the computer in safe mode
but the same thing happens. Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,
Rob

Actually, it is very likely that running one of those caused this problem in
the first place. See the link I provided in my response.
