xp home locks up

ocasionally xp home will lock up,i can't move the mouse,i
can't ctrl alt delete i just have to shut off the
power ??? plesae help

p.s. i have reinstalled xp, it does not record an error
when this happens,it is not running hot ???? this has
happened since the machine was new in january.2.4intel
512 ram

The cause of your problem could be many things.
Here is my story of an unrecognized defective hard drive.
I had the same problem as you with a build-it-yourself machine. Over time,
the problem became more frequent. Finally, the HDD died, and could not even
be run for the purpose of extracting my files.

If you feel paranoid, you can have your hard drive tested. I understand it
may cost around $60-70, but they really put it through its paces.

I hope you find the problem, soon. If it is the hard drive, you are still in
warranty, as most warranties are 1 or more years.

Possibly RAM? Try running Memtest over night http://hcidesign.com/memtest/
