XP Home Invalid Licence

I originally had Windows XP Home Service Pack 1 pre-installed on my PC, this
crashed but I did not have a XP disc. I went to my local PC store and they
lent me a copy of XP Professional so I could retrive my settings and files.
This copy already had been activated so i could only boot in safe mode, but
it let me transfer my files and settings anyway. I then returned the XP disc
to the shop and explained my problem. They made me a windows XP Home disc as
they knew that I had a legitimate XP Home licence key. The problem was that
this copy is Service Pack 2 and when I try enter my licence kay printed on
the XP sticker it tells me that it is invalid can someone help me?

Hi,

It's not the service pack that is a problem. It's the type of media, product
keys for differing types are not interchangable. If you had a preinstalled
system with recovery or OEM media, then you need an OEM disk to use your
product key. If they gave you a retail version of WindowsXP, then your key
will not work with it. The same applies in reverse. You need to contact the
system manufacturer for replacement media.

For one, copying any Windows setup disk is illegal no matter or what.
Two, your license key could have been used once, what you need to do is
contact microsoft for it, do not go to activation by internet, go to one you
do over phone and ask them, if you need to tell them your story.

The shop, if it wants to help, would need to provide you with a copy of
an OEM CD. Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD and/or license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which
they are purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't
work for any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP
Pro, and vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a
full version CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to
install a retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an
English CD. Bottom line: Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed &
matched.

This is simply not true. The license for the operating system is the
product key, not the cd. The OP already has the answer to his problem:
he has the wrong version of Home Edition.

No, not usually, although it might depend upon the specific
jurisdiction in which one lives. In the U.S., though, copyright law
specifically permits the making of a copy for "archival" purposes.
