XP home installation loop

when trying to reinstall windows xp after it stopped working. i found that i
was able to format the drives and install the files but when it rebooted
itself, before the GUI screens, it would restart the installation again

while looking through this site i saw two suggestions for this problem
1) dont press any key second time: but it doesnt say that it just goes
straight to the install
2)select IDE-0 as boot device after CDrom: but i also dont have one of those
as an option

The BIOS boot order should have IDE0 as an option even if BIOS fails to
recognise the presence of a hard drive.. check again.. cycle through all of
the options..

You could just "take the CD" out of the drive before it reboots.
Change BIOS boot order so that CD is no longer first in boot order.
Set HDD(0) (which is what IDE-0 is called) as "first" in boot order.
HDD(0) or IDE-0 should be "first boot" which means HDD(0) would be "before"
CDrom in boot order list.

thanks for the help but...i sort of broke my computer while trying to fix it.
i think i may have shorted out the motherboard or something it wont even load
the bios or any other screen for that matter.

Do you have any idea how you might have done that??

Do you hear or see anything when you turn on computer?
HD noise or flashing light?
CPU fan running?
Pwr supply fan running?

Hold down power switch for 10 seconds or so. Then restart.

what is make and model?
