My son-in-law did something to my computer and now some pre-installed program
files are gone, ie, games and basic files. Is there somewhere I can go to
re-install the program.

Appreciate the dilemma, however we need more info, it what program are you
talking about?
Please be advised RE:xp Home edition is not very descriptive, please post
the nature
of your problem in the subject, ie software missing files.

My system info says Microsoft XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
My problem is that I think I have to reinstall XP but it was already
pre-installed when I bought it and I have no CD to use. I am just now
noticing small things that are missing from my files, such as basic games
like solitiare

And you surely have a backup of your system.
No, well you surely will next time this happens.

If your system was preinstalled, is there a
"restore to factory condition" facility somewhere
on your hard drive where your son-in-law did no
damage?

Have you contacted the manufacturer to ask for
recovery CDs, usually available for preinstalled
systems if no CDs are supplied in the first place?

you can do the following to replace missing or corrupt system files.
Go to start click once, then select run, then type in cmd, when the black
screen pops up, enter sfc /f

Include the space, you may need the original xp install disc.

also to reinstall the games, go to the control panel select the add/remove
programs
then select the windows files and select the proper programs you want
installed, ensure they are checked. if you remove the check it will be
uninstalled.

you are going to find you will need the install cd for lots of things.

Check and see if you have a hidden partition for a system restore, to as new
condition, if so you can try this, but be aware you will lose any new data
added to the system since you got it home, ie pictures/personal data/e-mail
etc..
I would suggest you find a way to back those up, before you perform a restore.

The above statement is the reason that I will never again help relatives, friends or
anyone with their computer problems. (especially in-laws)
