XP Home Edition

I have a toshiba laptop with xp home installed. I had removed the fax
component for some forgoten reason and now when I try and re-install it the
system goes through the install process and says "finished" however when
checking the windows components section of ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS it is not
installed. The i386 folder was pre-installed with compressed files and
although I have expanded them nothing seems to help. In addition when
selecting the 'fax' option to re-install through the services dialogue box it
says that zero space is required for the files...I do not want to re-install
the whole operating system as have nowhere to back up my files...is there
anyone out there that can provide a solution for me??

Thanks in advance

Run, don't walk, to your nearest Computer store and buy a hard drive and
a USB external hard drive enclosure. Back up is a computer user's BEST
friend and some day you will profusely thank me for this advice.

As to your fax problem, are you sure it isn't installed already? Check
Start/All Programs/System tools/is there a Communications option?

That should be Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools

Hi Alias,
Thanks so much for the prompt response. You are of course right about the
backup drive which I have but in another office overseas...
Re the Communications options under all programs...There is such a component
but named @%systemroot%\system32\fxsres.dll,-118 ...very strange!
Any idea what went wrong?

Sounds like your fax install is corrupt. How long ago did this happen?
If it hasn't been all that long, try using System Restore to a date
before you had this problem. Another alternative is a repair install.
And, of course, there's always the option of reinstalling XP after you
get an external hard drive :)

Hi,
Happened 3 days ago and tried system restore to various prvious dates.
Interestingly, there are other components that will not install either such
as Hyper Terminal etc so looks like a re-install of XP coming up...
Thanks for the time spent on this

Try a repair install first and if that works, you won't need to
reinstall all your programs. If you don't know how to do a repair
install, check this out:

In its default installation, the Home version doesn't include the fax
service. See
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp.

Zero bytes is shown because the components are already installed, so
reinstalling won't make a difference in the byte consumption on your
hard disk.

Is there a Fax service listed in the NT services applet
(services.msc)?
Do you see a Fax manager under Start -> Programs -> Accessories ->
Communications?
Is a Fax printer listed under Printers and Faxes applet in Control
Panel?

Are you using a Microsoft-branded install CD or some bastardized
other-company-branded install CD?

Does your Toshiba laptop actually have an fax-capable analog modem
installed?
