XP Home Edition to XP Professional

I have a new laptop (A) that came with Windows XP Home edition (HP oem).
It's now sp2. I obtained a full version (not an XP prof upgrade) of Windows
XP Professional (?? oem). A couple of questions.

1) I can install the full version of XP pro over the XP Home edition?

2) I go ahead and install XP Professional over the XP Home on the laptop
(A). The registration for XP Home will no longer be valid on the (A)
computer and the existing applications should still work?

3) I can install the XP Home edition over an old PC (Win Y2k) and it will be
valid on the old PC (B)?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes, XP Home is upgradable to Pro. Start the computer and at the desktop
insert the Pro cd in the drive. When the splashscreen comes up follow the
instructions.

However, you should back up the system just in case, although I doubt you
will have a problem. You will have to reinstall SP2 (it includes SP1).

BUT

An OEM copy of XP is not valid on any other computer.

In any case, the OEM cd will not allow you to upgrade any other Windows. It
can only be installed as a clean install.

Also, Win 2000 Pro is not upgradeable to Home. Only to XP Pro.

You may want to run the XP Pro upgrade advisor from the XP Pro cd on the W2K
machine to see if that machine will take an XP upgrade and what programs may
present a problem.

The laptop manufacturer will not support the laptop under Pro. If the
machine is new, contact the manufacturer for upgrade options.

I agree that XP Pro is the right choice for laptops, but you cannot do all
the things you want. Right now, you could use the XP Pro to upgrade W2K to
Pro, but you cannot use the OEM cd to upgrade W2K to Home. An OEM cd will
refuse to upgrade anything.

I hope this helps.

After reading my own post, the line "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was
the play?" occurred to me.

Maybe. If it's OEM, no you can't, you can only do a clean install. If it's a
full retail you can upgrade.

If you upgrade, the old apps will still be there. If it's a clean install,
it will all be gone.

No. Home won't upgrade over W2k in any case, and if it's oem, the license
dies with the first computer was on, and if it was oem, it's likely not an
installable CD anyway, so forget that idea.

If it was a retail version of Home, you can use it again, but it will have
to be a clean install or a dual boot.

Thanks for your reply. As disappointing as it is, it would be even more
disappointing to waist a week-end battling the install.

Thanks again!
