XP Home Edition takes 10 minutes to complete boot

When we start up Win XP Home Edition on laptop Window seems to boot up as
normal except that the disk drive runs constantly for about 10 minutes.
During that time you cannot do anything. We do not have anything unusual on
the machine. I checked CPU usage during this process and it jumps anywhere
from 5% to 94%, mostly in the high range. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tom

How much memory do you have in the laptop my laptop has 512 and it boots up
fast.

Also how many items in your startup?

Run msconfig select startup and uncheck some items to see if that helps
maybe one of the programs starting is looking for a lot of resources
internet access etc.
If that does not work try turning off all non microsoft services in the
services tab and try that to see what happens.

Trial and error sometimes till you figure out what is causing the problem

Good luck

Somewhere for you to start..

You might also want to look at how much free space, if any, exists on the
hard drive.. an occasional defragmentation is good, as is running Disk
Cleanup..

There is also a chance that your hard drive might be failing..

and ...do you happen to have a virus scanner set to scan the drive at boot
time ?
