I reinstalled xp and then installed vcom system suite5
activated the fire wall and then copied my data files
from a dvd backup to the my documents directory. Now the
directory is marked read-only, even though I change it
through the properties tab. How can I change this?

open my computer, go to tools, click folder options, click on view, uncheck the display simple folder view in explorer's folders list. should no longer be read only when you check the properties on a folder or file.

tried this, folder is still read only. I have tried to
change the read-only status using powerdesk also.

My documents shows up in two places, under desktop and
also under Documents and Settings\owner

Don't worry about the default "read-only" status. Folders are always
writable; that is, you can always write files into them by default.
You can't stop that by adjusting the read-only bit in the folder
attributes. It really has no function.

To make a folder users can't write into, you have to use Permissions.
That's where the real power in folder/file control is.
