I have a sony PC running windows XP home edition. I
connect it to a fileserver running windows 2000 SP4. I
usually have an F drive which is a share on the server.
when i type net use, there are no remembered connections;
however, when i go to map my drive as f, it tells me
\\server\share is already connected to \\server\share.
would you like to change it? i hit yes and it keeps coming
up. However, i still have no f drive located in my
computer.

does anyone have any suggestions as to what can cause this
odd behavior?

Do you have any removable media devices (like a card reader) attached that
might map to F: ? I've seen that cause this sort of problem on occasion.
No drive will show if no media is presently inserted but Windows reserves
the letter. The solution if so is to use a higher drive letter for the net
mapping.

If that's not the case, I suggest running this command net use * /delete
and then try remapping. I've found this worked once or twice with similar
problems.
