XP Home Ed Not Recognizing Optical Drives

G

Guest

Running XP Home Edition on a 2-year old Dell Desktop along with two optical
drives which were installed at the factory. Suddenly, as of just a day or so
ago, neither drive appears in Windows Explorer - nor can I run a CD ROM or
DVD on either drive. Note: The power LED's light on both drives upon start up
and each drive's respective drawer can be opened and closed (so there's
definitely power to both drives - this much I'm certain of).

Any help, information, advice or free pharmaceuticals to help me cope with
my ever increasing frustration would be GREATLY appreciated.... (the request
for drugs should not be taken seriously, but my soliciitation for help in the
form of advice/fixes should be).

Thanks,

Hey Bo...

I decided to open the tower case just for kicks and, sure enough, the IDE
ribbon cable was unplugged. My error, I fear, since I had forgotten to plug
it back in when I was adding RAM chips a month ago. Well, needless to say, I
feel like a total idiot. Or, to sum it up perfectly...In the words of Homer
Simpson (my idol)..... "DOH!"

Still, I want to thank you for taking the time to offer your help.

Regards,

Mark
