Need help with deinstalling and then reinstalling xp. Can
anyone point me in the right direction for procedure?

You don't de-install. Just boot to the xp cd and follow the on screen
instructions to install xp.
You can do a clean install wiping out all old files or a repair install that
keeps files and fixes problems.

Try a repair install first. Repair install and clean install links below.
Click on the link below, or copy and paste the link into the address box
if using the web based newsgroup.

If you want a fully clean install, and reformat; you do it after
booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement
take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select
and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted
at the next stage. You will have to activate again on the net within 30
days, just like the first time

I would first, if you don't want to start all over with re-installing
other software, first doing a repair reinstall. (you should back up
data files first either way, just in case). Instead of New Install,
take Repair installation. This will retain your existing software
installations and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again,
especially SP1;
It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.

This should retain your activation status, though if you have never
registered you may have the setup suggest it now (don't bother).
