XP Home: Created CD in CD-RW drive won't read in other drives

With the included CD writing software in XP, I can easily
create a CD in my CD-RW drive, but when I put the CD in a
non CD-R or CD-RW, the CD is unreadable or the files on
the CD won't open properly.

Is there a setting that has to change to make this
created CD readable in any drive?

I had the same problem, and I solved it with Adaptec UDF reader (e.g.,
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3302-2100-9497911.html): it worked only with
rather recent (say <5 years old or so) pcs, with WinXP and Win98, and cd
drives.
