XP home - changing drivers on command prompt

I tried to change to driver D from driver C by typing "cd
D:" under the prompt "C:\>", but it didn't work. I got
line as follows:

C:\>cd D: (my typing)
D:\ (result)

C:\>


Anyone can help to fix it? Thanks!
