Update:-

The computer now gets through all the normal checks, finding th
processor, memory, all drives; through the PCI device listing
verifying DMI pool data; then it says "boot from atapi CD ROM
failure"; "boot from atapi CD ROM: failure". It has a new hard driv
in... .

Any thoughts? Do I need to get into BIOS to tell it to boot from flopp
instead? Or maybe try to get hold a bootable XP CD

You seem to be referring to a previous post, but since you didn't post
to that thread or quote any of it, we don't know what you are trying to
do. If you are trying to reinstall Windows, then you will need an XP
cd. All the XP cd's are bootable. From the error messages you
mentioned, your computer is already set to boot from the cd drive.

If you need more help then post back with full details.

All legitimate WinXP installation CDs are bootable.

If you have a new blank HD installed the system will need something to boot
from. Do you have backup image of your data from the old HD? If so what
program did you use to make the backup? Many backup programs come with a
Boot Environment. Tell us which program of have a look at the instructions
to see what options are available.

If you don't have any backups you will need to find something else to boot
your PC with (eg an operating system). The standard WinXP OEM CD is
bootable. Just insert the disc and reboot, follow the on screen messages. It
can take an hour.

Note: DONT physically connect your rebuilt PC to the internet until you have
checked that the firewall is ON.

Then once you have WinXP installed and the firewall on run Windows Update.

You could then reconnect your old drive to see if you an get any data off
it. Check the Master/Slave/cable link setting on the drive before you
connect it. If it was set as a master before you may have to change the
link to the Slave or Cable Detect position. See the makers web site for link
positions.
