XP hangs when I try to restart the computer

Windows XP hangs when I try to restart the computer. The
screen that say "Window is now shutting down" continues
on for a long period of time and window does not restart
as it should. I tried reinstalling windows, but it did
not help. Anybody have this happen to them and know what
to do?
