XP hangs when clear recently used files from the start menu

Whenever I clear the recently used files from the start menu by hitting the
clear button, the system hangs for a couple minutes before it executed the
clear request. Aside from being annoying, it holds me up from doing other
things. Any suggestions?

What is actually in the Recent folder is quite a bit more than the dozen
or so you see in "My Recent Documents. So it takes a few seconds to
delete all of them.

You could put a shortcut on your Desktop of the actual folder if you
wanted to see at any given time how many shortcuts are there. I have
one because I can see all of my Recent, not just a few. Regardless,
they take up minimal space (depending on your cluster size).

Thanks for your response. I understand what you are saying and it makes
sense. However, after messing around with the issue a little more I learned
something. The act of clearing the recent files was not the culprit. Even if
I do not clear the files but just hit the OK button to exit the screen you
would be in in order to clear the files causes the same event. The screen
freezes up, even to the point where I receive and "Not Responding" message,
then that initial screen will disappear after nearly a minute only to have to
repeat the same process when hitting th OK button on the initial Start button
menu.
