XP hangs on Applying Computer settings

Having an issue with XP Pro on my laptop. Have it plugged into our network
and it boots up fine. However, take it off the network and try and boot
standalone it will take at least 20 minutes to move past the "Applying
Computer Settings" screen.

I have searched but cannot find any help with this issue.

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

In My Computer, at Tools menu, "Map Network Drives", you probably have a
check in the box for 'reconnect at logon'

Negative. I boot without any drive mappings. (and that check box is also
unchecked)
