startup hangs at "applying computer settings"?

When I turn my networked computer on, it takes from 5 to 10 minutes for it to
boot up (windows XP Pro). It gets past the applying network connections, but
stalls at "applying computer settings" Some changes were made using the
administrator login, but I'm not sure which change could have caused this.
Any suggestions of what I could change back so it starts up in a normal
amount of time. (We don't really have a "network administrator" so
suggesting I talk to them won't reall help!)

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode? Once in Safe Mode you can run the MSCONFIG to limit startup options to diagnose the problem.

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;[LN];315222

When you start the computer in Safe mode, Windows loads only the drivers and computer services that you need. You can use Safe mode
when you have to identify and resolve problems that are caused by faulty drivers, programs, or services that start automatically.

If the computer starts successfully in Safe mode but it does not start in normal mode, the computer may have a conflict with the hardware
settings or the resources. There may be incompatibilities with programs, services, or drivers, or there may be registry damage. In Safe
mode, you can disable or remove a program, service, or device driver that may prevent the computer from starting.

To troubleshoot startup problems in Safe mode, follow these steps:
Click Start , and then click Shut Down .
Click Restart , and then click OK .
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
In Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode , and then press ENTER.

Troubleshooting boot issues can be a bit difficult to handle. Below is some information on a tool called Msconfig. Below that are some
links containing detailed descriptions of the tabs within the program and their functions and boot-up troubleshooting techniques.

If you are unfamiliar with Msconfig it is a program created to help diagnose boot issues. The Msconfig file is a simple stand-alone program
so it runs on any computer; you just have to get the correct version, the win98 version works in win98 and NT 4 and some early versions of
win2000 the XP version works on XP and later versions of 2000. With XP you can run Msconfig from the Start - Run then type Msconfig.
However with 2000 you will need to download a copy of the Msconfig utility from either a Windows 98 CD or XP CD and double click the
executable (it has a GUI so no need for command window).

The following are links to help describe the Msconfig utility and how to troubleshoot with it:
