XP Hangs at Splash Screen after MS Office Install

A client finally decided to upgrade his W'98 to XP - Intel
D850GB motherboard, 256Meg RAM (PC-800) P4 1.6Ghz
processor - usual CD-RW, etc.

First we did an upgrade (retail version of XP Home - full
version) and it looked like everything was OK, except it
would not load the drivers for his HP2300 printer. After
fooling around with it for most of an hour we bit the
bullet and did a full install.

XP formatted the drive, loaded and came up just fine,
found his printers, scanners, etc and was happy. Then we
loaded MS Office (Office 97 first time). The program
loaded and ran until we shut the system down. On boot
(cold start) we get to the XP Splash screen. There it
hangs until we get tired and turn it off.

Same thing happens with Office 2000 or XP.

Any ideas?

At the splash screen, hardware is detected, drivers loaded, and the HAL
is loaded into memory. More than likely its a hardware or driver
problem. Go into safe mode(if you can, and start tapping f8 after the
post and before the splash screen) and with the WinXP cd in the drive,
type in X:\i386\winnt32 /checkupgradeonly in the Run dialog box. Where X
is your CD drive letter. That should give you a report on what potential
problems you may have.

Alternatlely, go into safe mode and remove the printer and printer
drivers. Then restart. If that does not work, go back into safe mode,
open Device Manager, and disable all devices(video, sound, modem, net
cards, USB, CDROMS, etc... Then restart, if it works, you know its one
of the devices you just disabled. Now go back and put them back in one
at a time until you find the problem device.
