XP gone MAD

Hi everyone,

I pray someone can help me.
I had some viruses on my system and ran a spyware and virus removal program.
Now I can't get into windows at all and when I do get in my desktop keeps
disappearing and reappearing and the computer keeps crashing. Also , when I
try and run the recover thingy it asks me for the administrors pasword/or log
in and I don't know what this is. I have ran spotbot and VGA 8.0 ? and they
both found loads of problems. But as I say I can'y get into my own computer.
Also , when I did manage to get in I got a message about some run dll or
something was missing or counldn't be found.
Please help as I need to work on this computer urgently today.
Also , I followed someone elses instructions and went to msconfig and
unchecked all the boxes in start up and services and that did not help.
TA very much

sometimes issues with
computers are not always
caused by infections.

some are caused by
missing system files
that were inadvertently
deleted

or

the installation of incompatible
software or drivers

or

perhaps just plain faulty
hardware.

my suggestion is to use your
windows cd and repair your
windows with it.

this method will restore
missing or corrupted system
files with genuine ones from
the cd:

incidentally, sometimes
anti virus programs can
create issues on some
computers as well, like
lock you out.

How many? What viruses?

and ran a spyware and virus removal program.

What program?

Bear two things in mind:

1. A virus is not simply a nuisance thing that just sits somewhere on
your computer until you remove it. A virus is malware--malicious
software--that is designed to do irrevocable damage to the files on
the computer. Unless you remove it quickly after getting infected, it
may have already done its dirty work.

2. You say "viruses," plural, but you don't say how many. If you have
multiple infections, your chances of successfully removing them all
and putting the computer back the way it was becomes small. You also
say that Spybot found "loads of problems"; that makes it even more
likely that you can't recover from these problems.

If you truly had lots of infections, your best course of action at
this point is probably to reinstall Windows cleanly, reinstall all
your programs, then reload all your backed-up data (I hope you have
backed up your data).

On the other hand, feel free to try Mark Ferguson's advice first. I
hope I'm wrong and you'll be lucky.

In the future be aware that the best way to deal with malware
(viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, etc.) is to prevent them in the
first place. You do that by a combination of good software tools
(firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware), staying up to date with Windows
updates, and using care in everything you do on-line (avoiding dodgy
web sites, downloading pirated software, opening attachments, etc.)
