XP freezes after install

I have the following:

Intel D915PGNL Socket 775 Motherboard
Intel P4 530 3.0gGHz HT 1M 800FSB S775
Liteon 52x32x52x Beige Internal IDE CDRW Drive
Corsair Value Select 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz
Gigabyte GeForce 6200 Turbo Cache PCIe Supp. 256MB Status:
Maxtor 160G SATA
DVD Player
Sound Blaster Live Platinum 5.1

I built this computer from scratch and used the Maxtor software to partition
the drive. BIOS originally set for Floppy-HD-CD, but changed it to
CD-HD-Floppy to install XP. Installed XP without a problem and removed the
install CD and XP froze. Had to do a reset button reboot without the CD in
the drive and XP did not get past the initial screen. Did a reset/reboot
again this time with the CD in the drive and was able to get in XP, but the
minute that the CD draw was open, XP froze again. Installed Service P2, but
it did not solve the problem. What would be causing this problem?

Let me see if I get this right... If you open the CD drawer it freezes. Not
opening the drawer seems to let it run without a problem? What did you put
in it for a power supply?

I think the mistake was using the Maxtor software to partition the drive in
the first place..
XP setup disk could have partitioned the drive properly on it's own.

I am using a 400W power supply.

Did you install your INF file from the Intel setup disk that came with the
mobo?
You say you were able to install SP2 from where, the XP setup disk?
It just might be better to start over, you really don't want to half ass a
new system do you? Just let the XP setup disk format and partition the drive
first...
